1989 saw the promulgation of the Central Motor Vehicle Regulations (CMVR) and the first emission norms for automobiles in India. For Diesel engines the smoke opacity was restricted to 5.2 Bosch Smoke Number (BSN).
The MD2350 engine was modified by enlarging the cylinder bore to increase the volumetric efficiency and thus meet the emission limits. This engine was also known as the BD154 engine in Mahindra tractors.
- Plant – Kandivali (Bombay)
- Production – 1989 – 1991
- Engine Model – MD2450
Engine specifications –
- Type – Indirect Injection Diesel (IDI)
- No of cylinders – 4
- Capacity – 2522 cc (154 cu.in)
- Fuel Delivery – In-line, Jerk pump with Pintle injectors
- Governor – Mechanical , All speed Governor
- Power – 38 hp at 2300 rpm
- Torque – 13 kg-m at 1200 rpm
This engine had a short life of less than 2 years as the emission norms tightened further. However, the engine’s basic architecture is still in production as a BS6 compliant variant.
Author’s note – This engine was known for oil thickening as the engine oil becomes like “grease” by the time engine oil change is due. The number “2450” is a misnomer as well as mystery as it is neither the Max. RPM nor the capacity in cc.
