MDI3000 Diesel engine

The MDI2500 Diesel engine, known famously as the “Mahindra DI“, had one shortcoming – the max engine speed was limited to 2300 rpm. This leads to a lower top speed of the vehicle which it powers.

Advances in fuel injection technologies and optimization of combustion parameters led to the introduction of MDI3000 with an max speed of 3000 rpm. An injection advance timer was also added to further enhance the power delivery.

  • Plant – Kandivli
  • Production – 1996 to 2000
  • Engine Model – MDI3000/MDI 3150  Engine

Engine specifications –

  • Type – Direct Injection Diesel (DI)
  • No of cylinders – 4
  • Capacity – 2522 cc
  • Fuel Delivery – In-line, Jerk pump with multi-hole injectors and optional injection advance timer.
  • Governor – Mechanical , All speed Governor
  • Power – 55 hp at 3000 rpm
  • Torque – 16 kg-m at 1800 rpm

The introduction of this engine improved the top speed performance of many vehicles on to which they were fitted as well as ready for LCV applications.

Author’s note – This engine was plagued by complaints of excessive engine oil consumption, which was ultimately resolved by tweaking the piston ring pack design.
